About Dr. Alexandra Shustina

Meet Dr. Shustina

Dr. Shustina is a board-certified gastroenterologist and internist. She earned her medical degree from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, where she learned everything Western medicine offers. She also studied osteopathic manipulative medicine, a holistic approach emphasizing the connection between the structure of the body and its function and dysfunction. She completed her internal medicine residency at St. Vincent’s Hospital, a historic hospital in downtown Manhattan, and her gastroenterology training at Garden City Hospital in Michigan.

She worked in many hospitals in New York City and around the country, teaching young physicians, taking care of the critically ill, and performing thousands of colonoscopies and endoscopies. During her training and hospital work, she was disappointed that she was not able to help her patients with chronic illnesses with the standard methodology she was taught. She then completed advanced training in functional medicine, visceral manipulation, cranial osteopathy, lymphatic drainage, herbology, and energy medicine.

She also has an advanced research degree in molecular biology and uses her scientific background and critical thinking skills to get to the root of the problem. She is passionate about a natural approach to chronic illness and is interested in Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

About the practice

We have a chronic illness epidemic in the Western world, with increasing use of medications in adults and children. The “one size fits all” medical system is a bandage approach to health. A personalized “patient-focused” approach is the key to true health from the source and real preventive medicine.

Whole Gut Health combines the best of modern medicine with ancient traditions, natural health, and true prevention to provide patients with the best possible holistic total body care.

Dr. Shustina and the staff at Whole Gut Health take the time to listen to each patient, evaluate each patient’s unique conditions and goals, and develop an effective treatment plan addressing the root cause of the problem. We see patients for in-person consultations and via telehealth.
